School Resource Officers


The COREMatters Project is a 13 week curriculum that is co-taught by the SRO and a Physical Education teacher to the 4th or 5th grade students. The CORE-Matters Project teaches social emotional wellness with physical fitness utilizing the are of Tae Kwon Do which is based on discipline and respect. The curriculum is made to provide children the learning skills to be resilient and handle adversity, have respect for oneself and others, make better decisions, and bulling prevention. The COREMatters Project develops outer core strengthening the inner core character traits by practicing the “Code of Conduct” as follows:


A School Resource Officer (SRO) is a career law enforcement officer with sworn authority who is deployed by an employing police department or agency in a community-oriented policing assignment to work in collaboration with one or more schools. SRO’s basically have three roles at the schools: 

  • Teacher/Educator—Speak with the kids about drugs, tobacco, vaping, alcohol awareness and driver’s education (traffic law), personal safety and other crime prevention topics. 
  • Informal Counselor/Mentor—Another caring adult in the school that will listen and be a positive role model/mentor to students. 
  • Law Enforcement Officer—Assist school guidance teachers to mediate and resolve conflicts, counsel students and parents on law related matters, proactively connect with and divert at-risk students from the juvenile justice system.

An SRO interacts and communicates with students (classrooms, lunch room, recess, and sports) as a way to build positive relationships. The SRO helps teach the students that police officers are not bad people and that they are positive members of the community and can be trusted when a student may need help. The SRO investigates criminal complaints, provides security checks to the school grounds and monitors camera surveillance. The SRO provides security at school sponsored athletic and civil events.
